Since 1946, the National School Lunch Program has played a crucial role in supporting the well-being of our Nation's youth and enhancing the academic mission of our schools. In 1962, President John F. Kennedy established National School Lunch Week by proclamation, and it has been recognized annually ever since to raise awareness about the vital role school nutrition programs play in the lives of America's children.
National School Lunch Week celebrates the numerous achievements of the National School Lunch Program and emphasizes the importance of helping children develop healthy nutrition habits. As part of the United States Department of Agriculture (USDA), the program provides over 30 million children with nutritious meals each day.
During National School Lunch Week, we take the opportunity to acknowledge the dedication of parents, school officials, community leaders, and food service professionals who work tirelessly to ensure our children receive healthy meals. By promoting good nutrition and encouraging physical activity, schools can help children establish well-balanced diets and lead healthier lives.
